Houstonians Plan on Future Success
HOUSTON (May 27, 2009)— Today HoustonWorks USA formally awarded $20,000 in scholarship money to 10 local students who participated in the HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Program at a luncheon held at The Wortham Center. The students, surrounded by family, friends and local business and community leaders, were treated to a program featuring Key Note speaker Peter Brown, Houston City Councilman.
The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Program is open to all students between the ages of 17 and 21 who have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. These scholarships assist students with education funding for attending local colleges, universities, apprenticeship programs and vocational training schools. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarships are not needs-based educational grants.
“I am so proud to able to honor these 10 students for their hard work and continued commitment to education,” said Mr. Brown. “Houston has been very fortunate during these tough economic times. We have fared better than most large cities in the country and that is due to our diverse economy and our workforce has the job skills and training to succeed. HoustonWorks USA has been part of the fabric of Houston since its creation in 1984. All Houstonians benefit from the work done and the participants of HoustonWorks programs.”
“This past year has been very rewarding for HoustonWorks USA,” said Mr. Larry Green, Esq. and CEO of HoustonWorks USA. “Now, more than ever, Houstonians need this type of financial resource for deserving students that have worked hard and excelled.
