S.T.E.M. Camp Cultivates Next Generation’s Enthusiasm
HOUSTON (July 6, 2009)—HoustonWorks USA together with Shell Oil Company US (Shell), is proud to announce the Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) Youth Discovery Initiative 2009. This program provides middle school students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, an opportunity to advance their knowledge during this four week camp, starting today at Texas Southern University (TSU).
The program will provide participants real world experiences and hands-on activities focusing on science and technology along with engineering and mathematics. Each participant will receive a $200 stipend upon completion of the four week program. Students will spend four days each week working on projects and then have a weekly field trip that will help reinforce the lessons learned during that week.
“We are so excited about this great opportunity for students,” said Mr. Larry V. Green, Esq. and CEO, HoustonWorks USA. “The joint efforts with Shell on this program again emphasize our commitment to youth education as well as to the community. The students who are participating in this camp will come away with a greater knowledge and appreciation for science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Plus, they could find their future career.”
“This is an opportunity to increase students’ awareness of energy industry careers in the technical field and bring community organizations together,” declared Dr. Frazier Wilson, Shell Social Investment Manager. “The collaboration with HoustonWorks USA, Communication Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (CSTEM), TSU and Shell is one that aims to meet the needs of the community and expand on career education in an essential industry.
