American Hero General Charles Bolden Key Note

S.T.E.M. Camp Students Inspired by General’s Remarks about Future

HOUSTON (August 1, 2009)—It is not every day that you attend a closing ceremony for a summer camp and you have an American Hero providing the key note address.  But that is what happened to a lucky group of 50 students who have been emerged in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) during HoustonWorks USA Youth Discovery Initiative 2009, sponsored by Shell Oil Company US (Shell). The new NASA Administrator, General Charles Bolden, provided an uplifting message to a packed venue on the campus of Texas Southern University (TSU).

The program has provided participants real world experiences and hands-on activities including exposure to Forensic Science and Robotics.  Each participant received a $200 stipend upon completion of the four week program.  Students spent four days each week working on projects and then had a weekly field trip that reinforced the lessons learned in class.

“This has been a phenomenal program this year,” said Mr. Larry V. Green, Esq. CEO, HoustonWorks USA.  “The students were exposed to Forensic Sciences and all that is involved with DNA testing and fingerprinting.  The students worked in teams and created their own robots.  Plus they were able to hear how important Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics is going to be to our future from NASA Chief General Bolden.  This has been a great experience for them.”

The instructors for S.T.E.M. Camp were locally recognized teachers who have a passion of the subject matter plus innovative teaching techniques.  This year’s camp will ran from July 6, 2009 until July 31, 2009.  Please visit www.houstonworks.org in January for information regarding the 2010 camp.
