Students Plan on Continuing Community Service
HOUSTON (May 13, 2010)—HoustonWorks USA today announced the recipients of the 2010 HoustonWorks USA Scholarships. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Program is open to all students between the ages of 17 and 21 who have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. These scholarships assist students with education funding for attending local colleges, universities, apprenticeship programs and vocational training schools. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarships are merit-based educational grants.

The scholarship program was the idea of HoustonWorks USA employees to help assist students with the cost of continuing education. Students that apply for the scholarship must be between 17 and 21 and possess GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Students submit the application along with an essay describing why they are deserving of a scholarship and three letters of recommendations. The application process began in the fall of 2009 and ends with the award ceremony in May. The number of applications for this year’s program doubled from the previous year.

Merriman Scholarship, Northshore High School; Chisom Ejekam, HoustonWorks USA Scholarship, Lamar High School; Brittany Barker, Schlumberger Scholarship, Hightower High School; Gabriela Gil, Schlumberger Scholarship, Madison High School; Ricardo Santos, General Scholarship, Stafford High School; David Moctezuma, General Scholarship, Reagan High School; Faith Durham, General Scholarship, Sterling High School; Amanda Jean Cutrona, General Scholarship, Fort Bend Baptist Academy; Isaac Valdez, General Scholarship, Aldine High School.
