Summer program to launch students interests in math and sciences
HOUSTON (JULY 6, 2010) – School’s out for summer, but class will be in session for 100 local students as they enter the HoustonWorks USA STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) Initiative on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 on the campuses of the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. The Shell Sponsored initiative provides four weeks of real world experiences and hands-on activities to improve interest for future higher education and career endeavors.
“This is going to be a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our local students,” Larry V. Green, HoustonWorks USA CEO, said. “They will be equipped with the tools to not only expand their horizons, but prepare them to eventually work in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as compete in a global economy.”
Unlike the traditional classroom, students will be presented with a diverse repertoire including forensics, robotics and “green” technology. Each week will provide four days of instruction and one weekly field trip. Students will visit various sites including local museums, refineries, George Bush International Airport and the Johnson Space Center. Each student also receives a $150 stipend upon completion of the program.
“It is wonderful to see students who are interested in and committed to studying math and science.” said Frazier Wilson, Vice President, Shell Oil Company Foundation. “This is a great chance for Shell to continue helping build a strong foundation of future engineers and scientists who will be critical to helping America and the world overcome the energy challenge and build a bridge to a more sustainable future.”
STEM participants were selected via application and included 50 high school and 50 middle school students from throughout the Houston/Gulf Coast area. Freshmen and sophomore high school students will be hosted at the University of Houston-Main campus and middle school students at Texas Southern University.
