Office manager recognized for workforce development outreach in low-income communities

HOUSTON (October 25, 2010) –   HoustonWorks USA will be going gold this week as staff member Susan Pilgrim receives the public service award at the North Shore Community Fellowship of Faith Church and Partners in Power, Inc., Gala at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29, 2010 at 444 Maxey Rd.  Pilgrim will be honored among other leaders from the education, law enforcement, business and civic service sectors.

“I am so honored to be recognized by the North Shore Community Fellowship of Faith and Partners in Power, Inc.,” Pilgrim said. “I know I will be in the company of great community leaders.”

Pilgrim, office manager for the HoustonWorks USA Northshore career center, will be lauded for her launching workforce initiatives in the East Houston and surrounding communities.  In the past year, Pilgrim and her career center team have partnered with local schools and faith-based community centers to conduct preparation workshops for high school students to land their first job.  Additionally, Pilgrim has hosted open events for both students and their parents to register for job search assistance, labor market information and supportive services.

“Susan and her team have taught local students confidence and even built stronger parental involvement.” Lurlean Dixon, President, Partners in Power, Inc., said.  “She is not afraid to get out there in the community and meet the needs of those affected by this difficult job market and financial crisis.”

“The mission of HoustonWorks USA is to strengthen and improve local communities and support regional efforts for residents to compete in today’s difficult economy,” Larry V. Green, CEO, HoustonWorks USA, said.   “Susan’s commitment to her community is reflective of these core values and we share this honor with her and the entire Northshore team.”
