Dinner to provide sponsorship to low-income families
HOUSTON (December 14, 2010) – The generosity of the season will reach over the Ship Channel as HoustonWorks USA partners with Keep Jacinto City Beautiful for the Jacinto City Christmas Kindness Dinner at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, December 16, 2010 at Jacinto City Town Center located at 1025 Oates Road, Houston, TX 77029. The dinner, donated by Luby’s, Automated Logistics and private donors, will sponsor seven low-income families from the surrounding community.
“In today’s economy, the holidays can be a time of great challenge,” Christopher L. Ochoa, Executive Director for Keep Jacinto City Beautiful and Jacinto City Councilman Position #4, said. “The Christmas Kindness Dinner not only meets a vital need, but is a key opportunity to demonstrate both the civic pride and philanthropic spirit of our community and partners like HoustonWorks USA.”
With support of the HoustonWorks USA, Workforce Solutions Northshore career center and Houston Independent School District, each family was nominated and selected for sponsorship. Volunteers from the Workforce Solutions Northshore center will be at the event to assist and provide labor market and job search information to patrons. Students from YouthBuild Houston, a construction training program by HoustonWorks USA, will be distributing hand-made holiday gifts made from recycled and organic construction materials from Historic Houston and the City of Houston ReUse Warehouse.
Cynthia Olmedo, president of Initiatives for All and employment counselor at the Workforce Solutions Pasadena career center, will serve as the dinner’s key note speaker. Olmedo will speak on striving for academic excellence, the importance of community service and thriving from humble beginnings.
“The holiday season serves as an outstanding catalyst for HoustonWorks USA to go beyond our traditional programs to assist the underprivileged,” said Rick Diaz, HoustonWorks USA Board Member. “Our partnership with Keep Jacinto City Beautiful promises only to do more for the community in 2011.”
More than 75 volunteers are expected to participate, including live entertainment from the Furr High School jazz band, dance ensemble and choir. Each family will receive a full holiday meal and Santa Claus will be in attendance to pass out presents.
