Competition Exposes Students to Future Career Choice
HOUSTON (February 23, 2011)—HoustonWorks USA and Schlumberger Limited is proud to announce the winning entries in the Engineering Excellence (E2) Competition. The competition was open to all elementary, middle and high school students. Each school level was given a specific assignment such as engineering and conservation, engineering and sports or engineering and medicine. The finalists were judged by Schlumberger Limited engineers during the competition held at the Brown College of Engineering in Duncan Hall on the campus of at Rice University on Saturday, February 19, 2011.
“This was a tremendous event for the future engineers of greater Houston,” said Larry V. Green, CEO, HoustonWorks USA. “We were able to expose students to engineering as a career choice which is something they might not have considered before this competition. I am looking forward to seeing what these talented students will do with next year’s competition.”
“The E2 competition this year was extremely competitive but you can see the students had fun with their projects,” said Paula Harris Director, Community Affairs, Schlumberger and HISD Board President. “The students really embraced the connection between engineering and sports, environment and medicine. Each year the students continued to amaze me with their abilities and this I believe is a direct correlation between students, teachers and parents.”
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to individuals from elementary, middle and high schools. First place winners received a laptop computer, $100 gift card and a City Pass Ticket. Second place winners received $200 gift card and a City Pass Ticket. Third place winners received $100 gift card and a City Pass Ticket. All participants received a t-shirt, medallion and City Pass Ticket for participating. National Engineers Week was February 13- 19, 2011.
The 2011 E2 Competition Winners are: Elementary School: Stephen Wells, The Awty International School; Neelan Monroy, The Awty International School; Emma Stein, The Schlenker School; Middle School: Arianna Siddiqui, The Awty International School; Kevin Ong, The Awty International School; Jacob Grossman, Alexander Middle School; High School: Anjay Batra, The Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions; Kaiser Tin-U, The Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Jabari Hinson-Trezvant, Kipp Houston High School.
Information regarding the 2012 competition will be available in schools in September 2011.
