HoustonWorks USA and Schlumberger announce 2011 Engineering Week

Competition to challenge students and impact future workforce

HOUSTON (February 14, 2011) – HoustonWorks USA and Schlumberger Limited (NYSE: SLB), held regional competition of Engineering Excellence (E2), a city-wide engineering competition for elementary, middle and high school students in conjunction with Engineers Week on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at the Museum of Natural History and the Health Museum. The competition will conclude with the final round of competition on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Duncan Hall on the campus of Rice University.

These future engineers wrote an essay; created a poster board and 3-D display of their project for judging.  Topic included, “engineering and conservation,”  “engineering and sports,” and “engineering and medicine” for each respective grade level.   The competition will be judged by volunteers from the Engineering Week Committee with judges looking for creativity, originality and the use of recycled materials.

“The E2 Competition, and the observance of Engineers Week, serves as a catalyst to re-ignite an interest in engineering careers,” Larry V. Green, CEO, HoustonWorks USA said.  “The works of these students prove a tangible example that the future of scientific excellence is right here in our own backyard.”

“This marks our third year participating in the engineering competition with HoustonWorks, and we look forward to championing the career ambitions of the numerous students who will be exposed to the competition’s engineering professions, projects and presentations” said Paula Harris Director, Community Affairs, Schlumberger and HISD Board President. “As a technology company it is vital to us that students understand the importance and potential of careers in science and technology. Engineering Week is an important step in informing students’ career outlook.”

First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to individuals from elementary, middle and high schools. First place winners will receive $100, a laptop computer and tickets to Space Center Houston and the Museum of Natural Science. Second place winners will receive $200 and tickets to Space Center Houston and the Museum of Natural Science. Third place winners will receive $100 and tickets to Space Center Houston and the Museum of Natural Science. National Engineers Week is February 14- 20, 2010.
