HOUSTON (May 11, 2011)—HoustonWorks USA today announced the recipients of the 2011 HoustonWorks USA Scholarships. The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Program, composed of merit-based educational grants, honored 10 local students with combined high performance in academics and leadership. These scholarships assist students in attending colleges, universities, apprenticeship programs and vocational training schools.
“The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship program is an investment in excellence, as we work with our local partners to mobilize resources to help local students fulfill their academic potential,” Larry V. Green, CEO, HoustonWorks USA, said. “Every year, our scholarship candidates continue to raise expectations with their dedication to both their studies and communities.”
Recipients were honored at the HoustonWorks USA 2011 Scholarship Luncheon on May 11, 2011 at the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. More than 300 business and community leaders attended the event. The luncheon featured emcee Natalie Bomke, Fox 26 Morning Anchor; keynote speaker, Paula Harris, HISD Board President and remarks by Mayor Annise Parker.
“Now, more than ever, our students need assistance to succeed in their educational and career goals,” Judge Bonnie Hellums, 247th Judicial Court, Family Law Center and HoustonWorks USA Board Member, said. “The HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Program provides a foundation for the creation of future high-performance workforce, the next generation of our city’s leaders.”
The 2011 HoustonWorks USA Scholarship Recipients were: Cailey Cotner, Memorial High School; Warren Douglas, Houston Academy for International Studies; Victor Hu, University of Houston; Christian Mata, MacArthur Senior High School; Chelsea Minter, Jack Yates High School; Marisol Palomares, St. Joseph Catholic School; Lizet Pantaleon, Nimitz High School; Christian Tulio, Strake Jesuit College Preparatory; Heather Woitena, Pasadena Memorial High School; Ty Wilson, James Madison High School.
