
WorkReady Houston, a comprehensive program with Houston METRO that provides job training and placement assistance to Houston’s workers who are interested in acquiring new construction-related jobs and expand their existing skills. Available in English and Spanish, these courses introduce basic safety, construction math and blueprint concepts. Candidates who successfully complete the training will earn certification as a general laborer by the National Center for Construction Education & Research. The job-training initiative supports the needs of Houston METRO, Houston Rapid Transit and its subcontractors as construction progresses on the METRORail expansion project.
WorkReady Houston offers a series of free classes covering the following trades:
- General Laborer
Introduces basic safety, construction math, hand tools, power tools and blueprints. - Concrete finisher
Covers measuring and layout tools, tools for surface treatment, mixing and conveying equipment and concrete finishing. - Rebar installer
Teaches how to secure steel bars or mesh in concrete forms for reinforcement and how to use a variety of fasteners, blowtorches and hand tools, as well as how to bend rods.
