The HoustonWorks USA Internship Program is designed to enhance the employability of adults and youth who are having difficulty finding or keeping employment. Participation in the Internship Program helps develop a work history and an "employer" who can serve as a reference for future employment opportunities.
The Internship Program offers a wide spectrum of work site positions with public, non-profit, and for-profit organizations and companies. Work sites are selected that can provide meaningful work experience for individuals with a limited work history. Adults and youth will confront real world work situations under the care and supervision of professionals dedicated to their growth and development.
Who Can Participate?
Adults and youth who have been unsuccessful in finding work may be considered for placement in the Internship Program. Youth may begin working as an Intern at the age of 16. HoustonWorks USA staff will screen prospective Interns and work to match them to a work site that meets their qualifications and career objectives. Interns will undergo an interview process for entry into the Internship Program.
How To Participate?
Typically most interns will work 30 hours per week for approximately three months. The length of time is designed to replicate a "probationary period" most employers use for new employees. Any extensions beyond the prescribed time frame will be considered on an individual basis.
Once an internship is complete, the work site may choose to hire the intern. While unsubsidized employment at the work site is not guaranteed, the HoustonWorks USA Internship Program will provide all interns with unsubsidized employment opportunities and continued mentoring to assure sustained success in the labor market.
